A Colony on Mars

A Colony on Mars might be a solution to Earth overpopulation.

NASA has commissioned your company with the challenge to design the conditions that allow a group of not more than ten astronauts to live on the Mars for a period of not less than eighteen months.

Your group has to provide solutions for the supply of most of the needs of to ten astronauts during their expedition. They will have to obtain, oxygen, food, medicines, energy, construct their own quarters, exercise and investigate the surrounding territory for possible industrial or technological applications that could render an economical benefit and reduce the cost of establishing this colony.
For each of the following questions write at least five different ideas.

Brief Summary:
Volcanoes have intrigued human imagination since ancient times. Our unit will enable students to better understand volcanoes, their origin and the preventive measures we can use to address these events. The focus of our lesson plan will enable our team to use the TfU frame work to enhance the facilitation of the students understanding of this unit.

The learners divided in groups of four investigate each of the major sites where volcanic eruptions have affected the environment in the past: 1. Santorini Island eruption of 1628 BC 2. Pompeii 79 AD 3. Krakatoa 1883 AD 4. Mount St. Helen 1980 5. Pinatubo 1991 AD 6. Toba, Sumatra 55 000 BC 7. Yellowstone 620 000 BC The project should address amount of material send out by the explosion, frequency at which these volcanoes erupt. The student should make special emphasis on the effect of the eruptions on the environment, on the species in the near area, and civilizations if any around the site when they erupted. Also the project should contain information on the effect on the weather and what can be done to minimize the effect of these disasters on the population of the area.

Ongoing Assessments

The culminating project should be presented (using Power Point presentation or Flash) to the class by each group and at the end the class as a group should make a list of recommendations of solutions for disasters of this kind.

Exteme Weather due date 12/07/07

Introduction
Today you will engage in a whirlwind of adventure. You are going to become a meteorologist to study Weather (including rain cold fronts) and the occurrences of wacky events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and monsoons that affect different parts of the United States. You might have had experiences with some of these types of weather yourselves. If so, you should use these experiences when performing this study.

These natural weather occurrences can have many different characteristics and consequences. As a meteorologist you will be researching each to prepare a power point presentation and or a series of television reports on these characteristics and consequences.

Remember that your job as a meteorologist may depend on how well these reports are prepared and the accuracy of the facts presented. Now it's time to get to work. Good luck!

Tasks
1. Study of the atmosphere and the conditions existing on each of its layers and how they impact life on Earth. On this you should try to present a working model of the water cycle, study the different kind of clouds and how they can be used to predict the kind of weaher that will occur. Study the effect that pressure, temperature and humidity have on the prediction of weather.

3. Tornadoes are classified based on factors like their wind-speed. You will study this classification of tornadoes and work on being able to identify what classification each tornado is. You will also research the amount of human lives lost due to tornadoes. Search the web to locate the classification and data on the human lives lost. To start working on this task

Your mission today, as a meterologist, is to be able to use the fujita scale to determine what size the tornado was(f0-f5) on the F-Scale. You will also be expected to make 2 graphs about tornadoes. With these graphs, you will be given a data sheet on Iowa Tornadoes that has the year, number of tornadoes, deaths, injuries, and the cost from each. You will need to graph starting from 1950 to 1995. Graph every 5 years. Graph the average number of tornadoes and the average number of deaths from tornadoes. Tremendous Tornado Scale: To start off this activity you will need to study the Fujita Scale below. You will be given several pieces of data that you will use such as the wind speed and damage from the tornado, to determine what size the tornado was. You will then fill in the information on a separate piece of paper.

You will bar graph this information on your sheet of paper, by averaging(mean) every five years. (ex: 1950-1955's average) The second thing you will need to do is to bar graph the number of tornadoes that happened during the years 1950-1955, by the average (mean) every five years.

Brief Summary:
Volcanoes have intrigued human imagination since ancient times. Our unit will enable students to better understand volcanoes, their origin and the preventive measures we can use to address these events. The focus of our lesson plan will enable our team to use the TfU frame work to enhance the facilitation of the students understanding of this unit.





Generative Topic that link all the concept statements was Cause and Effects of Volcanoes.

It can be connected to social studies and language arts, and beyond to the disciplines of life it will enable our students to observe how vulnerable life is due to Mother Nature.

Our team realizes it will be a major challenge to our students to understand plate tectonics and its relationship to volcanoes. Cause and effects of volcanoes covers all bases for students to understand plate tectonics, volcanoes and their effects on climate, pollution and survival.

b) Using appropriate software the students obtain first hand knowledge of the places where earthquakes occur and therefore understand where the borders of the different faults are.
c. By plotting on a world map the position of the last five years volcano eruptions the learners obtain first hand information of the relationship between volcanoes and the borders of the different plates of the Planet.

After they plot the different earthquakes and volcano eruptions of the last five years the students are asked to compare their results with those shown on the programs and write their conclusions.

What effect volcanic eruptions have on the environment? And Why people settle near them?

Statement: Students will understand the effect of volcanic eruptions on the environment, and the reasons why people tend to settle in their vicinity.

Performances of Understanding

The learners divided in groups of four investigate each of the major sites where volcanic eruptions have affected the environment in the past: 1. Santorini Island eruption of 1628 BC 2. Pompeii 79 AD 3. Krakatoa 1883 AD 4. Mount St. Helen 1980 5. Pinatubo 1991 AD 6. Toba, Sumatra 55 000 BC 7. Yellowstone 620 000 BC The project should address amount of material send out by the explosion, frequency at which these volcanoes erupt. The student should make special emphasis on the effect of the eruptions on the environment, on the species in the near area, and civilizations if any around the site when they erupted. Also the project should contain information on the effect on the weather and what can be done to minimize the effect of these disasters on the population of the area.

Ongoing Assessments

The culminating project should be presented (using Power Point presentation or Flash) to the class by each group and at the end the class as a group should make a list of recommendations of solutions for disasters of this kind.
